Official Facebook game for Showtime/Lionsgate's Weeds TV series. Often described as Farmville meets The Sims, but with marijuana strains. The Weeds writers were actively involved — recording voice-overs and approving mission scripts.
Weeds Social Club was the official Facebook game for Showtime and Lionsgate’s hit series Weeds, developed by Mytopia in collaboration with Ecko Code. The game launched during the social-gaming peak and drew comparisons to FarmVille meets The Sims — only the player grew different strains of marijuana, ran a social club, and met characters from the show.
My role: As COO and Chief Creative at Mytopia at the time, I was responsible for the creative direction and production of the title. The Mytopia team partnered closely with Ecko Code to bring the property to Facebook.
The production worked directly with the Weeds show’s creative team — actors recorded voice-over and the writers’ room approved in-game mission scripts, giving the game an unusually high level of canon authenticity for a brand tie-in.
The launch generated coverage in The Atlantic and broader press, including some controversy about Facebook hosting a game centered on light drugs. It became a notable case study in TV-IP-meets-social-gaming in the pre-mobile era.
